PROJECT OVERVIEW

The purpose of this project is to create a platform for 360-video communication, this whole new 360-degree video channel should easy to use, imagine someone sending the 360-degree video content are as simple as sending text message through iMessage or Facebook Messenger, that means you can send the 360-video message and content to others at anytime and anywhere. User will get more rich information and detail from the 360-degree video and at same time they can directly exchange 360-degree information and content with others, people who run We-Media should have a great opportunity to promote their 360-degree work in their own homepage to others, and they can directly send the 360-degree video to others on this whole new platform. The biggest innovation of this 360-video social platform is that it build based on the AR or MR glasses interface, and you can send the 360-video to your friends, and vice versa.

With the help of the AR glasses and the 360 TALK, the communication between people will get to a whole new level, the connection between the people also can be strengthened. This 360-video platform will be a game changer, the traditional social platform will be eliminated if they can’t aware the power of the 360-video.

One minute video introduce all the features of the App

Background and Introduction

Since ancient time, humans have been looking for channels and ways to communicate with each other-from beacon fire of Warring States Period and letter carrying by pigeons to the telegraph and telephone, from email and short text message to the video chatting-these evolving communication channels are constantly influencing the way we connect and communicate and the way we live.

Humans have five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste, generally speaking, face-to-face communication has all 5 sense channels, and the quality of each channel is very high, like you can directly see, hear, touch, smell the person you talk with. Phones only provide audio channels, online video chatting only have 2D, flat screen, but we humans are three-dimensional creatures living in three-dimensional space. 2D video chatting miss out a lot of key information, such as we can’t see the body language and the surrounding environment. And it also only provides a very narrow viewing angle.

In this article, I will focus on the most promising communication channel in the near future—360-video. The beautiful things of 360-video is that you can instantly immersive yourself into another space with the help of wearable technology like AR glasses, it not only can provide you a real 360 degree environment, but also most important is that it can support the communication better, because a lot of information is non-verbal communication like head and hand movements, hesitations, voice tone, and facial expression, these relatively invisible and elusive information in the 2D video chatting can be perceived very well in the 360-video, which can greatly improve the understanding of participants’ emotions and intents. In addition, another advantage of 360-video is that it can create greater audience engagement, as viewers can become immersed in a story by seeing it in first perspective from all angle.

Here is some of the truth and numbers about the 360-degree video: The VR Market Will Reach $22.9 Billion By the End of 2020, 78% of Americans Are Familiar With VR Content, 81% of Those Who Try VR Would Tell Their Friends About It, 77% of VR Users Want More Social Engagement, 360-degree Video Has a 46% Video Completion Rate, 90% of American Say 360-degree Video is Better Than Normal Video.

THE PROBLEM

YouTube and Facebook are currently the main platform for 360-degree video, the user can upload their 360-video to their own channel and account, there are also other platforms that can support the 360-video uploading, but as far as I know, none of these platforms can support the 360-degree communication between the users. It is true that we can share different 360-degree video in many platforms, and let other people to watch it in the YouTube or Facebook, but the whole process is too complicated.

THE SOLUTION

What if we can create a platform specific for this promising communication channel, this whole new 360-degree video channel should easy to use, imagine someone sending the 360-degree video content are as simple as sending text message through iMessage or Facebook Messenger, that means you can send the 360-video message and content to others at anytime and anywhere. User will get more rich information and detail from the 360-degree video and at same time they can directly exchange 360-degree information and content with others, people who run We-Media should have a great opportunity to promote their 360-degree work in their own homepage to others, and they can directly send the 360-degree video to others on this whole new platform.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The intended audience for this new format of communication channel is the people who love to pursue a higher quality of communication and connection, and the people who enjoy the storytelling from the first perspective.

For the people who love to pursue a higher quality of communication and connection, 360-degree video can provide the better communication include more rich information and details like emotion changes, voice of tone, the surroundings, which could build a more strong connection between people, especially for the family members, lovers, friends. We all know that recently the terrible Covid-19 virus swept the world, this virus sperate the family members, lovers, friends, colleagues, this virus reduce the connection between people, this virus also make people feel a sense of alienation and loneliness. So now more than ever we realize that we need a way to build connection to go through this tough time, and the 360-degree video is the best way to do so, and because of the virus, we also know there would be a huge amount number of people who desperately need this new way to connect.

For the people who enjoy the first perspective storytelling, 360-video can support most real and immersive experience for them, the platform I will create would have a community, user can share their story include article, picture, and 360-degree video to everyone. The Covid-19 causes mistrust between people, 360-degree video bring us the first perspective storytelling, which I believe it can help public to see the things in other people’s perspective and increased the empathy, understanding and trust. So it means the 360-degree video may help us to build a better world.

STRATEGY

Now we have YouTube, Facebook and other kinds of platforms that can upload the 360-degree video, we need to think about what the disadvantages of these platforms, what important features are these platforms missing about the 360-degree video.

Prototyping and Testing

The concept is that I would build a social platform that support people sending their 360-degree video to others, just like they send text through the iMessage or Facebook Messenger. And people also can upload their 360-degree video and text to the homepage, other people can see what they think through the 360-degree video and text. The slogan for this platform is “we see, we love, we connect.”

I am really excited about my idea, I just feel that I am trying to build a whole new format of communication channel. We all know we can send text, audio, short video to others right now, but no one think about sending the 360-degree video to others, I think there are huge opportunities in this market, if any platform can support this function first, it can bring this platform a great advantages in the future. Some people said that it is a little early to launch the 360-video chat right now, because public don’t have knowledge and equipment for the 360-video. It is true that right now there no mobile phone can support 360-degree video shooting, and it is a pity that the new iPhone doesn't support 360-video shooting, but this is a big trend, there has been a lot of manufacturers are trying to do it, now the solution is that we can attach the additional devices such as Insta360 Nano camera to mobile phone, so it will convert it to a 360-degree camera.

My first idea is to design a mobile phone version of this APP, but we know the mobile phone is not the best devices we see the 360-video, and considering that AR glasses is nor very far away from normal user’s life ( many companies have launched the AR glasses, hoping Apple can launch their AR glasses as soon as possible), so the premise of using this App is that we all wear AR glasses (Using the app requires wearing AR or MR glasses). Here is the Welcome page of the App (Figure 1).

Figure 1 (welcome page)

And I decide to create the VR and AR version of this APP, people can choose their preference (Figure 2, 3). To do that they can switch the interface through the icon in the top right of the interface. The VR interface is good for the usage scenario where people sit in a fixed position and want to put all the attention into the App. And AR interface is half immersive, you can use the App while keeping an eye on your surroundings. And of course you can move the chat windows in any position and size in the AR interface to meet your needs.

Figure 3 (AR Interface)

In the bottom bar of interface we can switch between the Chat section, Contacts section, and Community section. First in the Chat section, we can talk with people like we talk in the WeChat or Facebook Messenger (Figure 4).

Figure 4 (Chat page)

The big difference is that people can send the 360-degree video to their friends. They can take a 360-degree video first by using the iPhone with insta360 Nano, then send the 360-video to the friends in the App, and they also can see the 360-video in the App with their AR glasses, this is a scenario where AR glasses are used in conjunction with a mobile phone. Contacts section is a part you can add your friends and people you like in the contacts list (Figure 5).

The Community section is a place where people can browse thousands of the 360-video (Figure 6,7). They can send friend request to publisher and add their favorite videos to their favorite lists.

The personal center (Figure 8) is a place where user can upload the video, text, and anything they want, and their friends can see the content they upload.

OPPORTUNITIES

The biggest innovation of this 360-video social platform is that it build based on the AR or MR glasses interface, and you can send the 360-video to your friends, and vice versa. With the help of the AR glasses and this 360 TALK, the communication between people will increase to a whole new level, the connection between the people also can be strengthened. Just like the slogan of the 360 TALK said: “We See, We feel, We connect.” We can see more, the body language, the facial expression, the surroundings, we feel more, we can feel like we are there, we are in the same space, so we will connect with each other than ever before. This 360-video platform will be a game changer, the traditional social platform will be eliminated if they can’t aware the power of the 360-video.

Promising Future

360-video match with wearable technology like AR or MR glasses is the biggest and strongest trend in the near future, we almost there, many companies have already pour the huge amounts of money into this industry ( AR, VR), we can’t ignore it just because it hasn’t happened yet. We need to see the trend and plan ahead to take advantage of it, because of this I made this 360-video social platform-360 TALK, hoping it can bring some insights to the public.
